Ever since the beginning of time salt has played a picturesque part in man's life. It has influenced the location of nations and cities; it has been the cause of wars; it has given rise to any number of superstitions and religious beliefs, and, together with air and water, it has formed one of the three foremost needs of human life. The salt of the past was not alone crude and impure....it was costly and hard to obtain. Today most salt is unfailingly pure, costs little to buy, and is seldom more than a short distance away. Here, again, science has scored a triumph fully as important as the radio, the electric light, and aeroplane and other spectacular discoveries.
