The present study is one of a continuing series of publications dealing with the culture of the Nushagak River region in southwest Alaska during the historic period (Fig. 1). Earlier publications in the series are a monograph on the ethnohistory of the region (VanStone, 1967), an annotated ethnohistorical bibliography (Van Stone, 1968a), and an archaeological report dealing with excavations at Tikchik, a nineteenth century settlement near the mouth of the Tikchik River (VanStone, 1968b).
