Tom and Maggie Tulliver are children of the honest but obstinate owner of the Dorlcote Mill. Tom is a prosaic youth, lacking in imagination and sensibility. Maggie is clever, a lover of books and music, whose looks match her intelligence. Maggie finds a kindred spirit in Philip Wakem, the deformed son of a lawyer who lives nearby. But legal dealings have provoked a rivalry between Mr. Tulliver and Mr. Wakem that grows so bitter it triggers the miller's stroke and eventual death. Tom is incensed when he discovers Maggie's secret friendship with Philip, which he considers to be a betrayal of their father. Matters are further complicated when Maggie finds herself drawn into an entanglement with the handsome, urbane fiance of her beloved cousin, Lucy Dean. Maggie is torn between the indelible ties of family, the strict morals of her time and the romantic yearnings of her heart, and her decisions are shocking to the stifling society in which she lives.
