Research/Resources Management Report I am very pleased that this prehistory of the Naknek drainage area has been written for the public and will be made available to the schools and communities of the Bristol Bay and Katmai region. In the early 1970s, while I was a math and science teacher in Bristol Bay High School in Naknek, I observed how little the students knew of their local and state history. When an Alaska History course was offered, I agreed to be the instructor because I was the only teacher on staff at the time that had been born and raised in the local area, so I did have some knowledge and sense of the history of the area. In preparation for teaching the Alaska History class, I knew that beginning with local history would make the rest of the study of Alaska history more relevant. I was aware of extensive research that had been done in the Katmai region by anthropologists and other scientists, but their work was not readily available, and the scientific reports that I did find were not developed for use by schools as resources for teachers and students. So, as a teacher for high school students, I spent many hours reading and studying reports and journals, to adapt the material for use and understanding by students. The local history inbedded in the Naknek Chronicle, including the extensive notes and reflections goes a long way toward making the local history come alive. Local family names, places, events, and historical events placed in the context of the "Naknek Chronicle", makes this publication a valuable teaching resource. s/Frank Hill, Alaska Federation of Natives. 20090416.
