The view that linear algebra belongs in the undergraduate curriculum has gained wide acceptance since CUPM announced its first recommendations for undergraduate programs. This is evident from the proliferation of courses currently offered on the subject. Three reasons for this trend are evident. First, business and engineering schools as well as economics, physics, and chemistry departments are now offering programs in which a basic knowledge of linear algebra is helpful, if not essential. Second, many mathematicians are now of the opinion that multivariable calculus (i.e., functions of several variables) is best treated from the point of view of linear algegra. Third, many feel that linear algebra provides an ideal introduction to mathematical reasoning, because (in contrast to the calculus) it lends itself to a rigorous presentation even at an elementary level. The authors concur in these opinions.
