In late October and early November of 1956 the Communist world was rocked by the most serious popular revolt against a Communist government that the world had ever known. Half a year earlier (February 1956), Nikita S. Khruschev, who had recently consolidated his power as master of the Kremlin, denounced the oppressive and criminal policies of Joseph Stalin, and pledged that efforts would be made to rectify some of those past crimes and errors.
